An Interview with Artist Phoebe Go

By Mira Dedhia

In the world of music, Phoebe Go is a rising musical talent. In a recent interview, the Australian indie artist revealed insights into her first-time touring experience in the United States, the inspiration behind her latest single, “7up,” and more.

Phoebe Go has begun her first-ever tour in the United States opening for Briston Maroney, marking a significant milestone in her career. Despite the hectic tour schedule and back-to-back concert nights, Phoebe expressed her gratitude for the “amazing experience,” highlighting the camaraderie within Briston’s band and set; she stated that everyone was “so lovely and kind” and that those sort of bonds and friendships “make a huge difference when everyone is working together intimately”.

She went on to enthusiastically share her plans for the future post-tour. With new music on the horizon, “7up,” her latest release, serves as a precursor to a larger project. The song, which came out January 31, 2024, holds significant personal importance for Phoebe, as it addresses the empowering theme of putting oneself first when faced with situations that no longer serve their purpose.

Reflecting on the creative process behind “7up,” Phoebe shared that the song’s heavy lyrics stem from the universal experience of reevaluating relationships and circumstances. The spontaneity of its creation, with the chorus lyrics surfacing without conscious intention, added to the authenticity of the track; in fact, she “didn’t have to search for the sound, it was just there from the beginning.” Phoebe described the songwriting process as a burst of emotion and was glad that the end result felt uplifting despite its deep subject matter.

Addressing her transition from being part of a 5-person indie band, Snakadaktal, to embracing a solo career, Phoebe shared that the familiarity of solo work felt like “coming home.” While initially concerned about feeling alone, she now values the vulnerability that comes with being completely herself, fostering deeper connections with fellow artists and fans alike.

Phoebe’s musical journey is influenced by a diverse array of artists, from classic legends like The Beatles and Nina Simone to more contemporary favorites like The Shins and Bright Eyes. When asked about dream collaborations, she expressed a desire to work with the late David Bowie.
