The Trenchies are a Chicago-based four-piece band. On November 9, the band had performed to launch their debut album, Addie’s Got a Famous Dad. The concert took place in Schubas Tavern, a cozy Lincoln Park venue which often showcases local Chicago artists.
Before the music started, I was surprised at the extent to which the concert audience members already knew each other. The feeling of community within the room was overwhelming. Laughter, enthusiasm, and a shared love of live music echoed through the hall as people waited for the band.
The Trenchies began their set with a short and explosive cover of “My Way” by Frank Sinatra. The song transitioned smoothly into “Primate,” a 2022 single with a smooth piano melody and vocals in harmony. I was instantly impressed by how much the band’s camaraderie and friendship shone through. Their infectiously wholesome energy filled the stage from the get-go,like I was casually watching a group of friends jamming together. Overall, this element made the show a much warmer experience.
The Trenchies played an array of songs from their new album. “Celebrities are Boring” is a playful tune with shouty vocals that poke fun at modern pop culture. “Shady Situation” is a remarkably catchy song with a lively tempo that made the audience members dance. One number, “Casio Keyboard,” about a keyboard bought at Goodwill for $5.99, included a surprise guest: a puppet. The band brought out a piano puppet, making it sing along to the comical song.
I left the concert with a long-lasting smile on my face. The Trenchies’ light-heartedness is much needed in the music world which, sometimes, is all too serious.
